The Subspace Channel

This page serves as a tribute to the Subspace Channel, the Virtual Broomcloset's message forum. First launched in 1996, it served as the hub of the Space Quest community for a number of years and attracted hundreds of dedicated fans.

Over time, the SubChan fell into disrepair and, eventually, the forum software stopped working altogether. By then, though, most of us had already moved on to social media, Reddit, Discord, and other modern hangouts.

But the Subspace Channel was a special place. It captured that unique "early internet" energy of a group of nerds with very specific interests discovering, for the first time, that there were other nerds out there who shared their passions. The conversations were lively, the mood was positive, and the community was welcoming to newcomers. It represented everything I loved about being a fan online in the 1990s and stands as a reminder of the internet that doesn't really exist anymore.

What has lasted are the friendships I made on the SubChan. I'm still in touch with many people I met on the forum nearly 30 years ago, and I've been lucky enough to collaborate with them on projects like Stair Quest, Late Last Nite, Pledge Quest, and Quest Quest: The Adventure Game Podcast. I've lost touch with many more, but I'll always remember the good times we had together, theorizing about why Roger Wilco's boots changed color between Space Quest II and Space Quest III. Thanks for the good times, Space Cadets!
