Introduction Request

As a new member to this list, I find the discussions of the language
interesting, but difficult to understand.  I wonder if someone can give me a
quick introduction to the language including some idea of the current status
of the language.

Is this language in use by anyone?  It is my understanding that there are about
1 million speakers of Esperanto.
